COBAGUAL is a small Bolivian community-based water and sanitation organization. It has been supported since its inception by a community-based church called 'La Iglesia Luz del Mundo' as well as the municipal government of Ascension de Guarayos, although it operates as an autonomous group and is not a religious organization. COBAGUAL specializes in BioSand filter projects with a strong hygiene education component and work in rural areas of Guarayos, a region in the tropical lowlands of eastern Bolivia. With more than 490 filters installed, and having completed thousands of follow-up visits to ensure that the filters are being properly used, COBAGUAL is one of the most experienced BioSand Filter implementer organizations in Bolivia. Due to strong local demand for improved sanitation, COBAGUAL is in the process of building its first prototypes of composting toilets and other locally appropriate latrines, which will be the focus of future projects. COBAGUAL is a member organization of the Bolivian-Canadian Clean Water Network. |
